The Tappan Zee Bridge: Forging the Rockland Suburb

For centuries the Hudson River shielded Rockland County from the forces of modernization that radically transformed the New York metropolitan region. Urbanization, immigration and industrialization were only minor influences while Rockland's landscape remained rural and its communities small and close knit.

The Tappan Zee Bridge, a three-mile link between New York's Westchester and Rockland counties completed in 1955, was built in response to the postwar housing shortage, our national love affair with the highway and the automobile and the power of the American dream.

The Tappan Zee Bridge: Forging the Rockland Suburb examines the local communities before the bridge, the debate over the need for a bridge and the subsequent transformation of Rockland into a dynamic postwar suburb. Based on archival materials, including the records of the New York State Thurway Authority, this book will for the first time tell the story of the bridge, the suburg and the changes in the lives of the people and their communities.

An oral history of residents has been compiled; excerpts will be offered as a CD with the book.

Roger Panetta, Ph.D., Director of The Tappan Zee Project, is Visiting Professor of History and Curator of the Hudson River Collection at Fordham University.

Publication of The Tappan Zee Bridge: Forging the Rockland Suburb was supported by a Preserve America grant from the National Park Service initiated by Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef.
