This outing will include two ?scholar-led? guided tours. First, we?ll visit the exhibition JACOB A. RIIS: REVEALING NEW YORK'S OTHER HALF. Jacob Riis (1849-1914) was a pioneering newspaper reporter and social reformer in New York at the turn of the twentieth century. Riis's novel idea of using photographs of the city?s slums to illustrate the plight of impoverished residents established him as forerunner of modern photojournalism.

JACOB A. RIIS: REVEALING NEW YORK'S OTHER HALF
features photographs by Riis and his contemporaries, as well as his handwritten journals and personal correspondence. This is the first major retrospective of Riis?s photographic work in the United States since the City Museum?s seminal exhibition, The Battle with the Slum, in
1947. It is also the first time his photographs and archive, which belongs to the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library, have been united. The exhibition is curated by Bonnie Yochelson, former curator of prints and photographs at the City Museum, and co-presented by the Library of Congress. It will travel to Washington, DC, and to Riis's native Denmark following its presentation at the City Museum.

Our second guided tour is?GILDED NEW YORK. Explore the visual culture of elite New York in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Inaugurating the Museum?s Tiffany & Co. Foundation
such Gallery, GILDED NEW YORK explores the city?s visual culture at the end of the nineteenth century, when its elite flaunted their money as never before. The era was marked by the sudden rise of industrial and corporate wealth, amassed by titans such as Cornelius Vanderbilt and Jay Gould, who expressed their high status in extravagant fashions, architecture, and interior design. The exhibition presents a lavish display of about 100 works, including costumes, jewelry, portraits, and decorative objects, all created between the mid-1870s and the early twentieth century. The dazzling works in the exhibition illuminate New York in an era in which a new American aristocracy atin storied balls in Fifth Avenue mansions and hotels. It was a time when New York became the nation?s corporate headquarters and a popular Ladies? Mile of luxury retail establishments and cultural institutions launched the city to global prominence.

Enjoy lunch on your own at the museum's caf? or at one of the restaurants within a four-block walk of the museum.

The Museum of the City of New York celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. To learn more about the museum, visit the website at
