Hike through History to 
Claudius Smith's Den

Price: $15/person (prepaid reservations are required, Price includes hike and choice of Rockland history book or HSRC T-shirt) 

This history-rich hike led by Gordon Wren and Tony Benedict will take you to Claudius Smith’s Den in Harriman State Park, a rock shelter on the Tuxedo-Rockland border that served as a hideout for the Revolutionary War–era terrorist Claudius Smith—known as “the Cowboy of the Ramapos”—and his gang. 

Additional notes:

  • Space on this hike will be strictly limited to to ensure safety.
  • The hike is rated strenuous, with difficult portions. Participants must be in good hiking shape and wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes.
  • This hike will take approximately 3–3.5 hours and has steep sections. Bring water and lunch or snacks.

Cancellation policy: Refunds can be given only if your space can be filled prior to the hike. A waiting list will be compiled, and available spaces will be filled on a  first come, first served basis. Only those who have made full payment can be accommodated.
