The Ghost Army -- 2013 Update

Dear History Enthusiasts,

Many members of the Historical Society of Rockland County have generously supported The Ghost Army documentary, filmmaker Rick Beyer’s remarkable story of American GI’s in WWII (many of them artists) who used inflatable tanks, sound effects, and illusion to fool the Germans. I wanted to let you know about some exciting new developments and not-to-be missed events.

 1) A landmark exhibit of original Ghost Army art opens Saturday, April 13 at the Hopper House Arts Center in Nyack.  Curated by Rick and illustrator Liz Sayles, from Valley Cottage, it features wartime work from more than 15 Ghost Army soldiers, including Rockland County veterans Bill Sayles (Liz’s Dad) and Ned Harris, as well as fashion designer Bill Blass. Come to the opening reception!

 2) There’s a special screening of The Ghost Army Sunday, April 14, at 5 PM, at The Picture House in Pelham. It’s in honor of New Rochelle Ghost Army veteran Dick Syracuse, who will join Rick to answer questions afterwards. Last chance to see the film on the big screen before the PBS broadcast. Get tickets before it sells out!

 3) The nationwide PBS broadcast of the film takes place on Tuesday, May 21, at 8 PM. It will be carried locally by WNET Channel 13. To see the short promo, click here:

 4) Finally, there’s a special Memorial Day weekend screening at the Nyack Center on Sunday, May 26, at 5 PM.  Rick and Liz, veterans Ned Harris and Bill Sayles, and other special guests will be there.  Info and tickets available here:

Rick adds:  “I’m extraordinarily grateful for all the support from folks in Rockland County, and hope people will come to the events to see what they have helped to create.”

The HSRC was very proud to have been involved in The Ghost Army project; we are delighted that so many of our members have continued to support it!  On behalf of everyone at the HSRC, I hope to see many of you at some of the upcoming Ghost Army events.
