2015 History in Your Own Backyard Bus Tours

The Historical Society of Rockland County Is Pleased to Announce the Continuation of 

HISTORY IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD


A series of historic day trips within
Rockland County focusing on Houses of Worship, Cemeteries, and Pipe Organs 

The third year in this series begins in June and will take place in central Rockland County (New City, Nanuet, Spring Valley, Pearl River/Nauraushaun). It has been made possible in part by generous contributions from Germonds Presbyterian Church and I Love NY
.

The first trip will take place on June 6 with a bus tour to explore historic Houses of Worship. This trip will include stops at:
     
    - English Church (New Hempstead Presbyterian, 1734)
          - United Church of Spring Valley (1865)
          - St. Joseph's Church (Chapel 1901)
          - Orthodox Church of the Holy Transfiguration (1856)
          - Germonds Presbyterian Church (1860)


The June 6 day trip begins at Banchetto Feast, Nanuet, at 8:45 am and ends after lunch (approximately 2 pm). The price is $69 per person ($64 per person for members of the HSRC) and includes bus transportation, guided tours and a delicious lunch.  Space is limited. Pre-paid reservations are required. Registration closes for this trip on May 30, 2015.

Future trips in the 2015 series include:

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 – Historic Cemeteries 

Bus leaves Westchester Burger Company78 North Route 303, West Nyack, at 8:45 am, and includes bus transportation, tours, and lunch

We will tour by bus several historic cemeteries, including Germonds, Martinus Hogencamp (where Jacob Blauvelt is buried), Mount Rest, Coe, Nanuet, and St. Paul’s Highview. A knowledgeable guide will board the bus on each stop, presenting the history of each cemetery. In addition, we will learn about some notable people buried at each cemetery. Although we will be disembarking at two or three cemeteries, these stops will not involve a lot of walking. Our day will conclude with lunch at Westchester Burger Company in West Nyack. Registration for this trip closes on September 12, 2015.

 

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14 – The Pipe Organs 
Bus leaves  La Terrazza Restaurant291 South Main StreetNew City, at 8:45 am, and includes bus transportation, musical performances, and lunch 

Our bus tour will travel to sites of several of central Rockland’s most historic and best-known pipe organs, including United Church of Spring Valley, Nauraushaun Presbyterian Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church; Germonds Presbyterian Church and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. We will experience these instruments as their organists present classical, sacred and popular selections. Our tour ends with a buffet luncheon at La Terrazza restaurant in New City. Registration for this trip closes on November 7, 2015.
