Employment Opportunities: Museum Services Assistant

Position type: Part-time (16-19 hours per week); some evening and weekend hours. Available immediately.

Description: Primary responsibilities include welcoming and assisting visitors, answering phones, and responding to mail and email sent to the HSRC in a timely manner; managing front-desk operations, including the collection of admission fees, sales of books and gift shop merchandise, and reservations for events, trips, and group tours; assisting in the management of membership records, including updating the membership database, and helping to coordinate quarterly and special mailings; maintaining the organization's master calendar to record meetings, events of all types, and appointments with outside vendors and service providers; monitoring inventory of office and other needed supplies and supervising maintenance of office equipment; and maintaining an organized and efficient environment throughout the History Center.

Hours for this part-time position are somewhat flexible but will align with public hours of the HSRC. The Museum Services Assistant reports to and works with the executive director and a varied team of staff, volunteers and student interns. Qualifications: Excellent people skills, a pleasant phone manner, and superior organization skills are required. Undergraduate degree, preferably in business management or a related program of study. Business experience in office administration, preferably in the field of museum administration or nonprofit organizations. Proficiency in use of email and the Internet, website updating, social networking sites, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Publisher, and PastPerfect (or equivalent contact-management database). Excellent writing and/or graphic design skills are a big plus.

Additional Notes:

  • The Museum Services Assistant takes direction from and reports directly to the executive director.

  • Because the museum works with children and front desk responsibilities include handling donations and admissions fees, candidates considered for the position will be subject to background check prior to hiring.

  • Hourly rate is commensurate with experience.
