One of the tasks for which Loyalists were ideally suited during the Revolutionary War was secret service. Loyalists came from all social, ethnic, and economic classes of society and were able to mingle and interact easily in the countryside, under the guise of being Rebels themselves. Todd Braisted returns to the HSRC with a look at Britain’s less well-known figures and their secret efforts to gather intelligence in the strategic Hudson Valley.

About the speaker: Todd W. Braisted is an author and researcher who specializes in Loyalist studies during the American  Revolution. He has published more than 60 books and journal articles on period subjects, including Grand Forage 1778 (2016). His website, RoyalProvincial.com, has been the leading site for Loyalist research since it debuted in 2000. He is a past president of the Bergen County Historical Society and Brigade of the American Revolution and a fellow in the Company of Military Historians. He has lectured extensively on Loyalists and other subjects across the United States.
